PSYCH EDELIA steht nicht nur für eine spezielle Rockmusik sonder nicht zuletzt für alles entrückte, verschwurbelte, formlose, zellulare.
Vielfach gabe es Specials in Ausgaben des Musik Express oder Good Times neben einer großen Zahl von Spezialmagazinen wie Shindig, Ugly Things oder Flashback.
Bands wie die Temples, The Black Angels, Wooden Shjips, Tame Impala oder The Flaming Lips führen die Band-Traditionen teilweise fort.


Der Autor Aldous Huxley und der Wissenschaftler Humphry Osmond prägten das Kunstwort „psychedelic“ in Erfahrungsberichten, die sie durch Experimente mit bewusstseinsverändernden Substanzen machten.
Eine von Desorientierung, Entfremdung und Rationalismus enttäuschte Generation flüchtete, mitte der 60er, zunehmend in eine irrationale Welt von Bewusstseinserweiterung, östlicher Religionen, Esoterik und Musik.
Das Erzeugen von Trance, Rausch und Ekstase wurde breitwillig aufgesogen.
Alles, was zu außerordentlichen Wahrnehmungsfähigkeit führte war "psychedelisch".
Damit wurde ein geeigneter Begriff gefunden, der sich schnell um die ganze Welt verbreitete.

Ein charakteristisches Merkmal der Psychedelia ist die Vermischung unterschiedlicher Techniken.
Film, bildende Kunst, Mode, Sound und Philosophie wurden zur Einheit und zum Gruppenerlebnis eines neuen Lebensgefühls.

Schnell kam die Etikettierung als „Hippie“ und „Flowerpower“ und der damit verbundene industrielle Ausverkauf.
Trotzdem ist es sicher nicht übertrieben von der „Revolution der 60er-Jahre“ zu sprechen, die sich auf die Jahre 1965 - 1970 eingrenzen lässt.
Viele Veränderungen von damals bilden die Peripherie, der Rockmusik bis heute.

Man denke nur mal an Lightshows, an Klangtüfteleien im Studio und Konzertsaal, Plattencovers, Magazinen, Poster
Wah Wah-Pedal, Fuzzbox oder Rückkopplungs- und Phasing- Effektgeräten.
Oder auch das spielen mit Stilen und Genres, sowie der experimentelle Umgang mit Songstrukturen.
Der Niedergang des Psychedelic Rock war dennoch nicht aufzuhalten.

Besonders der Missbrauch von Rauschgift wurde zum Problem und die Musikindustrie kontrollierte zunehmend das Business.
Anfang der 70er gab es einen Wandel Richtung Landkomunen und erdigeren Klängen.
Der Handel mit Rockmusik wurde zum ganz großen Geschäft gemacht.
Die einstigen Hochburgen London und San Francisco verloren an Anziehungskraft.
Weiterentwickelt und verfeinert hat sich das ganze zum „Progrock“ oder "Spacerock".

The words 'Psychedelic rock' appears on the 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS' business card. This is the first known use of the term.

The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators war demnach die erste Psych-Scheibe.

Die Band stammte zwar aus Texas fand aber hauptsächlich an der Westküste Anklang.
Ihre erste Platte unterschied sich komplett von allem bisher dagewesenen.
Angefangen beim Cover über den Texten, dem Gesang den Songstrukturen sowie dem Sound und ihrer sonderbaren Aura.
Als Besonderheit hatten sie ein Instrument namens "Electric Jug" erfunden mit dem sie merkwürdig/trippige Sounds erzeugten.
Ein dem Debut ebenbürtigen Nachfolger, wurde mit Easter Everywhere hervorgebracht.
Danach zerfiel die Band und es wurden noch 2 Alben, posthum, veröffentlicht die sehr durchwachsen waren.

LSD25 war ja schon Jahre vor 1966 bekannt auch Bob Dylan oder die Doors, die sich 1965 schon psychedelisch nannten" hatten Erfahrung damit.
Man muss dazu wissen, dass dieses Zeug noch legal war und auf Partys verteilt wurde.
Die ersten Musikaufnahmen, die im Rauschzustand aufgenommen wurden, waren mexikanische Riten, also Folkmusik.
Ähm, Beatniks also Leute der sogenannten Beat Generation waren da auch schon jahrelang auf dem Trip.

Schon 1961 gab es eine Single von den Gamblers die LSD25 hies . Ein musikalischen Einfluss gab es aber nicht.

Dieser Song stellt den Auftakt eines neuen Popzeitalters da.
Inspiration gab das Buch: The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert
Einer ganzen Generation wurden neue Möglichkeiten eröffnet, längst ging es nicht mehr um Songs zum tanzen und stampfen.
Experimente, Philosophen und Kunst bestimmten ein Bündel neuer Ausdrucksformen.

dieser Song wurde von Grace Slick schon im Jahre 1965 verfasst.
Am 24.6.1967 als Single veröffentlicht, stieg er direkt in die Charts und verbreitete seine Botschaft im ganzen Land.
Eigentlich ein Fall für die Zensur, wurden die Lyrics raffiniert in den Kontext harmloser Kindergeschichten (Alice in Wonderland) gestellt.
Die prägnant marschierende Bassline, wurde von Ravel's Bolero beeinflusst.
Symbolisch wird hier auch ein Protest gegen den Vietnam Krieg ausgedrückt.
Ein Meilenstein!

Mit Eight Miles High schufen die Byrds ein völlig neuartiges Musikerlebnis.
Inspiriert durch John Coltrane's (modalen) Jazz und den Sitarklängen Ravi Shankar's, wuchs die Bedeutung instrumentaler Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten in der Rockmusik.
Roger McGuinn verwendete die Spieltechnik der Sitar und versuchte Teile von Coltrane's India auf seiner 12-String Rickenbacker Gitarre zu imitieren.
Durch den monotonen Rhythmus löst sich, beim Hörer, das Zeitgefühl auf.
Im Solo gibt es keine Melodien, nur stakkatohafte Riff-Rhythmik, Breaks, Starts und Stopps.

Gene Clark schrieb dazu eine Folkballade, die durch den Gesang der Byrds, über den Klangwolken schwebt.
Schon im August 1965 trafen die Beatles die Byrds in L.A., wo sie Lennon und Harrison mit ihren Sitarklängen vertraut machten.
Mit Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) hatten sie diese Erfahrung auch gleich umgesetzt und die Idee östlicher Klangfarben, in der Rockmusik, für sich verbucht.
Im Vergleich zur Beatles-Psychedelia von Tomorrow Never Knows, blieb die Musik der Byrds immer Konzerttauglich, während die Beatles Klänge im Studio bauten die eigentlich ein nie dagewesenes musikalisches Ereignis dokumentiert.
Eight Miles High wurde dagegen in Versionen bis zu 19 Minuten sehr oft Live aufgeführt.

The Amazing Charaltans

Die Wurzeln, der Psychedelia, liegen in einem Kaff namens Virginia City.

Im Red Dog Saloon fanden die ersten psychedelischen Konzerte mit Liquid Lightshows statt.
Die The Charlatans waren die Hausband dieser Bar, welche den zweifelhaften Ruf genießen, als erste Rockband unter LSD-Einfluß vor Publikum gespielt zu haben.
Man muß dazu wissen, dass dieses Zeug damals noch legal war und die Einnahme in spielerischer Absicht erfolgte.
Diese Art des Gemeinschaftserlebnisses verbreitete sich schnell.
Schon bald wurden die Konzert in die Longshoremen's Hall von San Francisco verlegt.
An der US Westküste waren die Charlatans die führende Band, sowohl musikalisch als auch vom Outfit her.
Wobei die Mitglieder George Hunter und Michael Ferguson als die ersten Hippies galten.
Ferguson betrieb in San Franciscos Haight-Ashbury eine Boutique, die Keimzelle der Hippiebewegung.
Versuche eine Charlatans-LP herauszubringen waren bis 1969 vergeblich, als es so weit war hatte sich die Band längst aufgelöst.



Ausführlich wird dieses Thema auf der DVD The Life and Times of the Red Dog Saloon behandelt.

The Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine



Die wichtigste Band der UK-Psychedelic war zweifellos The Pink Floyd zur Zeit von Syd Barrett.
Mit Astronomy Domine schuf er einer der ungewöhnlichsten Songs der Ära.
Barrett machte sich vom etablierten Popvertändnis frei und sprengte das Vorstellungsvermögen seiner Hörer mit Weltraumthemen.
Dem Ohr optische Eindrücke zu vermitteln war die Prämisse jener Jahre.
Unterstützt wurde er zunächst hauptsächlich von Rick Wright, der ihn bestärkte seine avantgardistischen Ideen umzusetzen.



Vor Astronomy Domine wurden die beiden fantastischen Singles Arnold Layne und See Emily Play veröffentlicht.



Arnold Layne war einer der ersten Songs der Popgeschichte, zu dem ein Clip gedreht wurde.
Produziert von Derek Nice, zeigt es die Band am Strand von East Wittering, West Sussex beim versuch eine Schaufensterpuppe zu bekleiden.
Die Kosten dafür betrugen 2000 £.

Meine CD's und auch früher die LP's sind alphabetisch nach Bands sortiert, dann folgen der Albumtitel, das Erscheinungsjahr, das Herkunftsland, die jeweilige Plattenfirma und zuletzt um welche Spielart es sich hier handelt wie zum Beispiel Psych. Durch gesetzte Filter kann ich, wenn ich will, die Gesamttabelle nach den unterschiedlichsten Kriterien sortieren. Die jeweilige Spielart einer Band/ eines Albums ist natürlich subjektiv und wird ggf. von einer anderen Person anders bewertet.

Soft Machine wurde 1966 von Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers und Daevid Allen gegründet.
Obwohl die Band ihre Wurzeln in Canterbury hatte, wurde sie bald in London ansässig.

Gigs wie im Roundhouse oder UFO Club zählten zu den Highlights in der psychedelischen Londoner Szene.
Am 29. April 1967 nahmen sie an dem Happening "14 Hour Technicolor Dream", bei dem auch Pink Floyd uvm. dabei war, teil.
Während des Sommers 1967 war die Band an einem Avantgarde-Theater-Projekt in St.Tropez, an der französischen Riviera beteiligt.



Im Februar 1968 begannen Soft Machine, recht spät, die Aufnahmen ihres ersten Albums in New York.
4 Tage im April, mit Tom Wilson und Chas Chandler als Produzenten entstand das Album überwiegend aus First Takes.
Aufnahmetechnisch nicht besonders gelungen, handelt es sich um Stücke die Soft Machine schon lange im Live-Repertiore hatten.
Auf die Live gespielten Instrumental-Eskapaten hatte man bei den Studioversionen verzichtet und sich auf die Song-Parts konzentriert.
"The Soft Machine" gilt heute dennoch als Klassiker der psychedelisch-progressiven Phase, der späten 60er Jahre ... und das zu Recht!
